Driving Policy
The greatest risk our people face is the road.
This policy applies to all employees and contractors — as driver, passenger and witness. It is a short, clear and strong message to everyone working with SeaLand, directly or indirectly, about the importance of driving.

This document is the cornerstone for building a strong driving programme, supported by related standards and procedures. The topics below are the most basic items in our driving system, to be adhered to by all employees and contractors under all circumstances. Journey management and driving standards are used alongside this policy to ensure our driving programme improves daily.
Seat belts
All employees and contractors must wear seat belts at all times when driving a vehicle, and must ensure that all other occupants are wearing them too. At SeaLand this is considered a condition of employment.
Journey management
Each location's journey management programme addresses local driving conditions and identified risks. Every location has an active programme that complies with the applicable standard, monitored by journey management centres according to the country or location decision.
Driver training and qualification
Only qualified personnel and contractors may drive on behalf of the company — company-owned, leased or rented for business purposes. Approval is granted to drivers who have taken defensive driving training every three years and commentary driver training annually, or more often at the instructor's discretion.
Substance abuse
Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or narcotics is strictly prohibited and subject to disciplinary action including termination, as stated in the company Substance Abuse Policy.
Fleet management devices
An approved driver improvement monitor is installed in all vehicles designed for city and road use. Every location reviews the data gathered and uses it to continually improve driver skills, with management actively involved in implementation.
Mobile phones
Phones may be left on to alert the driver of an incoming call or message, but the vehicle must be brought to a complete and safe stop before responding. Drivers should neither initiate nor answer a call or message while driving, whether or not a hands-free device is available.
Disciplinary action
Violations of this policy can result in suspension of work up to termination, according to the level of violation.
